Drive-Thru Repair EMAs - Right for You?

February 25, 2013 ·

We've said it before and we'll say it again ... drive-thru repairs are a fact of life ... whether you're talking about drive-thru timer repairs, drive-thru headset repairs, or the myriad other issues that can come up with sensitive, electronic drive-thru equipment.

So what's a QSR operator to do? We already know that regular maintenance is a sure-fire way to manage the cost of drive-thru repairs. But if you're looking to better predict what your costs will be, and manage a budget, then a drive-thru repair equipment maintenance agreement (EMA) could be right for you.

Drive-Thru Repair Equipment Maintenance Agreement

A drive-thru repair EMA can help minimize the costly downtime associated with drive-thru repairs, while maximizing the lifespan of your equipment. Think about it ... if you know your drive-thru repair costs are already covered, wouldn't you be more likely to send in equipment with a minor issue, before it becomes a major and costly drive-thru repair? With an EMA, you're prolonging the life of your valuable drive-thru equipment, and operating with well-maintained equipment that delivers peak performance. And one low monthly price helps to simplify your restaurant's budget ... not to mention avoid large, unexpected drive-thru repair expenditures.

Covering Major Drive-Thru Equipment Manufacturers

CE offers monthly EMAs for all HME, Panasonic and 3M drive-thru products. So whether you're talking about a drive-thru speaker system, a drive-thru speaker post, or a headset repair (to name just a few), you'll enjoy the peace of mind of knowing you're covered.

4-month Drive-Thru Repair Warranty

How confident is CE about the quality of our drive-thru repairs? We cover every single drive-thru repair with a 4-month warranty. Some restrictions and conditions apply, of course. But does your drive-thru repair center offer such a good warranty?

100% Satisfaction Guaranteed

And while we're talking about how confident we are in our drive-thru repairs, let's up the ante. At CE, if we can't fix your drive-thru equipment, you'll receive a $100 credit toward the purchase of a new unit, or $65 toward the purchase of a refurbished unit. That's why here at CE, we can say with confidence ... "we fix what others can't ... or won't.

Five Sound Lessons for Improved Drive-Thru Resonance

February 08, 2013 ·

When it comes to drive-thru repairs and drive-thru headset repairs studies have shown time and time again that there is a direct correlation between speed of service and order accuracy to audio quality. The better your audio quality, the quicker and smoother your drive-thru orders are—and the smoother and quicker the orders, the more money you can put on the books.

Drive-thru headset sound quality is a good news/bad news scenario though. The bad news is that, as you may have experienced, drive-thru equipment (even the high-tech stuff) loses sound quality over time. The good news is that there are a number of affordable drive-thru headset repairs, tweaks, maintenance, fixes and upgrades you can make to improve your sound quality, and the overall profitability of your drive-thru business.

Here are 5 'sound' lessons on how to improve the sound quality of your drive-thru headsets and audio sound system:

Tip #1: Lend an Ear
To determine the sound quality, and whether that sound quality is deteriorating and requires drive-thru repairs, you need to put yourself in both your customers' and your employees' places. Once every couple of months drive through your own drive-thru and listen to the sound coming out of the speaker. Be sure to drive through and not stand next to the post because sound quality sounds much better with your ear next to the speaker instead of next to a loud engine. Also, put on the headset once in a while to hear what your employees are hearing. Doing this regularly will keep you abreast of whether drive-thru headset repairs are needed.

Tip #2: Mic Check
Every once in a while pretend you're an awesome MC and do a mic check and speaker check. Ideally they should be replaced every 3 to 4 years. Depending on the weather that your system is regularly exposed to, including rain, snow, sleet, hail, humidity, salt water, etc., you may need to change them more frequently.

Tip #3: Muff and Screen It
You wouldn't make coffee without a filter and you wouldn't trapeze without a net so why use microphones and speakers without earmuffs and windscreens. Dust and other small particles get caught in the earmuffs and can reduce sound quality. They also need to be changed for sanitary reasons. Your employees will thank you on multiple fronts for changing the muffs regularly. Employing a windscreen will also greatly improve communication, and both of these are super-cheap drive-thru headset repairs to sound problems.

Tip #4: Change up and Care for your BatteriesBatteries wear out and their contacts become dirty and/or corroded. So, be sure to regularly change your drive-thru batteries, don't wait until they die because the static of death is unbearable. Also be sure to keep the battery contacts clean.

Tip #5: Consider Going Digital
Drive-thru systems are an analog system in a digital world. With the exception of purist DJs everything else has gone digital, and for good reason—the quality is just better. Consider doing a quick cost-benefit analysis to figure out if moving to a newer, digital system like HME's new ION IQ, would be profitable for your business.

Maximizing Sound Quality in Your Drive-Thru System

January 28, 2013 ·

Few things do more to reduce speed and efficiency in quick service restaurants than poor sound quality in the drive-thru lane. When customers and employees can't hear and understand each other, it takes longer to process orders and the number of mistakes increases.

For most drive-thru systems, the biggest obstacle to good sound quality is extraneous noise, especially if the restaurant is located near a busy street, strip mall or highway. Fortunately, QSRs can mitigate these and other sound quality problems by following a few simple drive-thru design principles. To create an acoustic environment that will minimize extraneous noise while enhancing sound clarity:

  • Place the order point behind a building, facing away from noisy traffic, neighbors, and busy streets or highways. If necessary, use landscaping (trees, shrubs, etc.) or a concrete wall to direct environmental noise away from the order point.

  • Use a speaker post instead of a menu board for the order point. The post's separate sound chambers will provide better sound quality for both customers and employees.

  • Place the inbound microphone in the speaker post at least 42 inches above the ground, close to the level of the customer's face at the order point. If the microphone is too low, it will pick up engine and muffler noises that will interfere with sound quality. If your restaurant is located in a windy area, consider using a screen to block additional wind noise.

  • To prevent feedback, place the outbound speaker at least two feet from the microphone. Check the speaker on a regular basis to ensure it stays tightly mounted. This will avoid rattling noises that can distort the sound and make it difficult to understand the order taker.

  • Use a high-quality headset, such as the ION IQ from HME, for transmitting clear, intelligible sound from the restaurant to the customer's vehicle.

A properly designed drive-thru system that maximizes sound quality will reduce order errors and labor costs while increasing revenues and repeat business -- an outcome that every QSR would like to see!
